About Our Business
United Sound is a full service, 24-hour, 128-track recording, mixing and mastering facility.
Our facility contains 3 state of the art recording studios as well as mixing and mastering
rooms. Unlike many studios, sound architects and engineers designed our rooms. Thus,
our sound is very even and natural, no matter where you stand in the studio.
Standing majestically on Second Avenue at Antoinette, United Sound became Detroit's
first major recording studio in 1933. In our 72-year history, many famous artists have
utilized our facilities to make hits including; John Lee Hooker, Jackie Wilson and Aretha
Franklin. In over 72 years, we have done work for every major record label. Not far behind
the ground level glass window lies the original “Studio B”. To the rear of the building is a
massive extension within which sits Studio A.
In fact, Berry Gordy, Jr., with the help of a loan from his family trust, bought studio
time to produce his very first Motown record: Marv Johnson's "Come to Me”. Barry Gordy,
Jr., was so enamored by the facility that he purchased a nearly identically shaped
building and called it “Hitsville”. In addition to a rich history, United Sound has an even
brighter future. Today, United Sound continues its tradition of platinum sound by offering
a suite of state of the art equipment and exclusive services.
